đ˝ď¸ Have You Ever Felt Like Everyone Is Watching?
Have you ever been in a restaurant, bowed your head to pray⌠and suddenly felt like the entire room noticed? If youâve ever done that, you know the feeling. Youâre holding hands (or trying to), someone is peeking, someone is whispering, and youâre wondering if this is coming across as peaceful⌠or just chaotic. Recently, Iâve been thinking about that. Because our family has started praying when we go out to eat. And if Iâm honest⌠we still struggle with it. Even though we pray quietly, thereâs always that little thought: Are people watching us? And maybe they are. But maybe thatâs not such a bad thing. Because what people are actually seeing isnât perfection. Itâs just a family⌠trying. And honestly, this verse has helped me reframe that whole feeling: Matthew 18:20âFor where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.â Jesus wasnât saying we can only pray alone. He was reminding us that prayer isnât about being seen by peopleâitâs about being known by God. So even in a busy restaurant even with wiggly kids and whispered prayersâŚIt still counts. Because our focus isnât on whoâs watching. Itâs on Whoâs listening.
đ The Stories Behind Our Prayers
If you came over at bedtime, youâd see another side of it. I ask my boys who they want to pray for. Our 4-year-old answers immediately âJesus.â Every time. Which⌠honestly feels like the most correct answer in the room. Then our 6-year-old says: âI want to pray for my invisible dragons⌠and my dinosaur toys.â And I pause for a second likeâ Okay⌠do we redirect this? Are the dragons okay? But then we pray. Because behind every one of those little prayers⌠thereâs a story. A heart thatâs learning. A mind thatâs growing. A child who believes God is listening. And honestly, that matters more than getting the words âright.â
đ What Prayer Really Is
Sometimes we think prayer has to sound a certain way. Calm. Thoughtful. Put together. But Scripture shows us something different. Prayer is personal. And sometimes⌠we donât even have the words. âThe Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.â â Romans 8:26 That means even when our prayers are:
short
distracted
a little all over the place
God still understands. Heâs not waiting for polished sentences. Heâs listening to our hearts.
đ Word Study:
Proseuchomai
Word: proseuchomai (ĎĎÎżĎÎľĎĎοΟιΚ)
Language: Greek
Pronunciation: pro-syoo-kho-my
Meaning:
to pray
to talk with God
to make a request
to draw near
Used in Scripture:
This word appears throughout the New Testament when people come to God in prayerânot with perfection, but with honesty.
Why It Matters:
Understanding proseuchomai changes how we see prayer. Itâs not about sounding impressive. Itâs about drawing near. And when I think about that⌠I realize something. My kids are actually really good at this. Even the one praying for dinosaurs and invisible dragons. đ
â¤ď¸ Every Prayer Counts
Throughout the Bible, people prayed in all kinds of ways. Desperate prayers. Simple prayers. Honest, messy prayers. And God listened to all of them. Which means⌠Heâs not sitting at our dinner table expecting perfection. Heâs there in the middle of:
the early âamenâ
the giggles
the distractions
and yes⌠the dragons
⨠Finding Meaning in the Mess
One of the most freeing things Iâm learning is this: Prayer doesnât have to be perfect to be powerful. Whether itâs:
a quick prayer over fries
a tired prayer at bedtime
or a heartfelt prayer that makes you pause and smile
God is there. Not waiting for perfect words. Just present hearts.
đą Faith in Action: Start Small
This week, try one simple step:
đ Choose one moment each day to pray together
(before a meal, at bedtime, or in the car)
Keep it simple. Keep it real. Just start.
đŚđť Kidsâ Table: Who Should We Pray For?
Ask your kids:
Who do you want to pray for today?
What are you thankful for?
What do you need help with?
And whatever their answer isâŚ
Lean in.
Because theyâre learning that God listens.
đ Prayer Focus
Dear God, Thank You for meeting us in our everyday moments. Thank You that we donât need perfect words to come to You. Help our family grow in the habit of talking with You honestly, simply, and often. Teach us to draw near to You, even in the messy moments. Amen.
