If you’re reading this, you may be wondering, “Where do I go from here?”

Maybe you just read Romans 5:8 for the first time. Maybe you’ve recently placed your faith in Jesus. Or maybe you’re simply curious and want to learn more.

One of the best ways to grow in your faith is by becoming part of a local church.

But if you’ve never looked for a church before, it can feel overwhelming.

The good news? You don’t have to find the perfect church because there isn’t one. Every church is made up of imperfect people who are learning to follow a perfect Savior.

Here are a few things to look for.

1. A Church That Teaches the Bible

The most important question isn’t, “Did I like the music?” or “Was the building nice?”

Instead, ask:

“Did they faithfully teach God’s Word?”

A healthy church believes that the Bible is God’s Word and teaches it clearly, faithfully, and in context.

Look for a church where Scripture is read, explained, and applied to everyday life.

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching…” (2 Timothy 3:16)

2. A Church That Proclaims the Gospel

The heart of Christianity is the gospel.

A Bible-believing church teaches that:

  • We have all sinned.

  • Jesus died for our sins.

  • Jesus rose again.

  • Salvation is a gift of God’s grace received through faith—not something we earn.

If a church consistently points people to Jesus, that’s a wonderful sign.

3. A Church That Loves People

Jesus said His followers would be known by their love.

No church is perfect, but a healthy church strives to love God and love others.

Look for a church where people welcome newcomers, care for one another, and seek to serve their community.

4. A Church That Helps You Grow

Following Jesus isn’t meant to be a solo journey.

Look for opportunities like:

  • Bible studies

  • Small groups

  • Prayer gatherings

  • Service opportunities

  • Classes for new believers

Growth happens best in community.

5. A Church That Points You to Jesus. Not Itself

Healthy churches don’t build their identity around a personality.

Instead, they continually point people back to Christ.

Jesus is the foundation of the church.

Questions to Ask When Visiting

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself after attending a service:

  • Was the Bible clearly taught?

  • Was Jesus central to the message?

  • Did the people seem welcoming?

  • Can I picture myself growing here?

  • Does this church encourage people to know and obey God’s Word?

Pray as You Search

Finding a church is an important decision.

Ask God to give you wisdom and lead you to a church where you can worship Him, learn His Word, and grow alongside other believers.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God… and it will be given him.” (James 1:5)

Remember…

You don’t have to have everything figured out before you walk through the doors of a church.

Every follower of Jesus started somewhere.

Take one step at a time.

God is faithful, and He delights in leading those who seek Him.
